Sons of Temperance of North America. Live Oak Division no. 29 (Lockeford, Calif.)
Biographical notes:
First temperance society in Lockeford, Calif., the Dashaways established by Dr. Dean Jewett Locke, town founder (c1858) in response to local alcohol-related murders. This group superseded by Live Oak Division no. 29, Sons of Temperance (1860-1865). This order gave way to Independent Order of Good Templars (1865-c1900) and Women's Christian Temperance Union (1889-c1915). All of these societies are both fraternal and charitable. Wore regalia, marched in parades, gave picnics, presented speakers, and aided sick and indigent members. During Civil War, U.S. Sanitary Commission briefly sponsored local fund-raising organization, Soldier's Aid Society, in Lockeford (1864-1865). Membership of this group largely overlapped that of temperance organizations. Group activities were also similar.
