Biographical notes:
Jacob Rodriguez Rivera was from a converso family from Seville, Spain. He arrived in Newport, Rhode Island via Curacao in 1748 where he introduced the manufacture of spermaceti candle-making. Next to Aaron Lopez, Rivera occupied the highest position in the commercial, religious and social life of Newport's Jewish community. His daughter Sarah, married Aaron Lopez.
