Bishop; instrumental in establishing Livingstone College; ordained an African Methodist Episcopal Zion deacon 1860; consecrated a bishop 1872; founder and first bishop of the Carolina Conference; president of the convention of Negroes assembled at Raleigh in October 1865; delegate to the constitutional convention of North Carolina 1867; magistrate under the provisional government in North Carolina and later deputy collector of internal revenue for the United States; first black assistant superintendent of North Carolina Public Schools, 1868-1871; assistant superintendent, Freedmen's Bureau; founder, organizer and the first grand master, Grand Lodge of North Carolina 1870-1883; and author of One Hundred Years of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church.
