Born January 9, 1837 in Erie Co, Pennsylvania; attended school in Ohio; admitted to the bar at Jefferson, Ohio, 1859; Principle of Richland Seminary in Kalamazoo County, 1859; practiced law, 1861; raised a company for 17th Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry, 1862, served as captain until 1863; elected Circuit Court Commissioner, 1864; Prosecuting Attorney for Kalamazoo County, 1866-1870; elected to Congress 1873-1875, 1879-1883, 1885-1895; Senator, 1895-1911; died in Kalamazoo, November 16, 1916.
