Biographical notes:

Hunt was particularly active in the fabrication, sale, and shipment of hemp and hemp products, including hemp yarns, twine, rope, and bagging. He maintained a weaving shop in the Lexington area for producing hemp bags, which was staffed with black weavers and white supervisors. Hunt also sold and shipped other products, including saltpeter and tobacco. His merchandise was shipped both by wagons and, via Maysville, Kentucky, by keel boats to New Orleans, Louisiana, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From Pittsburgh, overland transshipment was customary, and Hunt had extensive contacts with other merchants, agents, bankers, and insurance brokers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York, New York; Providence, Rhode Island; Boston, Massachusetts; Savannah, Georgia; and New Orleans.
