Cabet was a French politician and religious leader. He published the widely read "Voyage in Icarie" in 1840 and established a community based on communism and pacifism bringing it to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1849.

From the guide to the Icarian Community records, 1850-1851, (L. Tom Perry Special Collections)

The Icarians were a utopian movement founded by Etienne Cabet first in New Orleans, and then in Denton, Texas. In early 1850, the Icarians established a colony in Nauvoo, Ill, that had just been vacated by the Mormons. In 1852, the community purchased land in Adams County, Iowa. Between 1858 and 1859, the Nauvoo colonists moved to Adams Colony and established a new colony near Corning. It was incorporated on September 8, 1860. The colony prospered during the Civil War by selling hides and foodstuffs to the Union Army. In 1878, due to a disagreement between the conservative and progressive factions, the colony split into New Icaria founded by the Conservatives, and Young Icaria headed by the Progressives. The last Icarian colony in Iowa disbanded voluntarily in 1898.
