Biographical notes:

Frank C. Newman is a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley and a retired associate justice of the California Supreme Court. He joined the Boalt Hall School of Law faculty in 1946 and served asdean from 1961 to 1966. Since 1967, Professor Newman has traveled worldwide working on human rights issues and related matters for the United Nations and Amnesty International.

Frank Cecil Newman was born in Eureka, California on July 17, 1917. He received an A.B degree from Dartmouth College in 1938, and law degrees from Boalt Hall at U.C. Berkeley and Columbia University. He spent most of his lengthy career teaching at Boalt, as a professor of international and human rights law and as dean. He spent five years as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California. He died in Oakland, California on February 18, 1996.
