Biographical notes:

Seth Luen Pope was a descendant of early English settlers in the area of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. His father, Seth Pope (1803-1886), was a ship captain who sailed to Oregon in 1850 and settled in St. Helens. His mother was Mary Henwood Pope (1811-1842), a native of East Cowes on the Isle of Wight, England. Seth Luen Pope worked on ships and held various jobs throughout the Pacific northwest, including Pend Oreille, Idaho. He moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1870 and is credited with building the first telephone system in the city. His brother was William Henwood Pope, who served as Portland City Auditor in in the 1890s.
