The Kent State University Press was founded in 1965. The first director was C. Howard Allen who came to Kent State after serving as editor and director of the Western Reserve University Press from 1946 to 1958. Paul Rohmann served as the second director of the Press, after having been the director of the Antioch Press for 12 years until it folded due to financial difficulities. The Kent State University Press contined to print and distribute the active back list of books from the Antioch Press. Rohmann retired as director in 1985. John Hubbell is the current director of the Press and is also the current editor of the journal Civil War History which began its publication at Iowa State University in 1955. Hubbell has been the editor of this journal since 1965 when he was at Iowa State and this journal has been published by the Kent State University Press since Hubbell joined the Kent faculty in 1968.
