Biographical notes:

George Lafayette Beal was born in Norway, Maine in 1825. He enlisted in 1861 and served as captain in Company G, First Maine Regiment of Infantry. The commissions he held during the war were: Captain, Company G, First Maine Regiment of Infantry; Colonel, Tenth Maine Regiment of Infantry; Colonel, Twenty-ninth Maine Regiment of Infantry; Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers; and Major General "by brevet" in 1865 for meritorious services during the war. He was finally discharged on January 15, 1866.
