Helen Simpson was born in Australia of French heritage; she became one of the earliest female undergraduates at Oxford, and lived her adult life in England. A remarkably diverse writer, she is primarily remembered as a novelist, gifted with an elegant, satirical style that was at once farcical and slightly horrific. She wrote several mysteries with Clemence Dane, and was a charter member of the Detection Club, which also included Dorothy Sayers. She was killed during the bombing of London in World War II.
