Worked aboard a steamboat (the S.B. Rose, Moses Greenwood and others) on the Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas and Yazoo Rivers. His brothers Will and Thomas, a lawyer, Thomas's wife Fannie, and his father lived in Golconda, Illinois.
