1798 ensign in the 3rd foot guards; 1799 lieutenant, captain; 1805 served in Hanover; 1807 served in Denmark, deputy assistant adjutant-general of the reserve; ? 1810 and 1813 served in the Peninsular War; 1811 captain, lieutenant-colonel; 1821 lieutenant-colonel in the 47th foot in India, brevel colonel; 1824-1826 served in Burma; 1828 exchanged to the 14th foot in Bengal; 1830 major-general; 1829-1834 commander of troops in Jamaica; 1838 knighthood; 1838-1839 Bengal Division of the army of the Indus; 1839 served in the First Anglo-Afghan War, colonel of the 98th foot; 1840 GCB; 1841 lieutenant-general; 1847-1850 commander-in-chief and second member of council in the Bombay presidency; 1854 general, colonel of the 32nd foot.
