Biographical notes:

Josiah Nickerson Knowles was born in Eastham, Massachusetts, in 1830. As clipper ship captain, he commanded ships including the Wild Wave, the Kentuckian, and the Charger, setting records for fast passages. In 1858, he was stranded for several months as a result of the wreck of the Wild Wave on Oeno Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. The Glory of the Seas was his last clipper ship command. In 1880, Knowles settled in San Francisco, where he was active as a merchant and shipper in the whaling industry. Knowles died in Oakland, California, in 1896. The Glory of the Seas was built by Donald McKay in 1869 and sailed until 1923.
