Theatre manager. Educated in London and Southampton, Sumner was in the Merchant Navy 1941-1947, theatre manager and stage director in England 1947-1952. Founder and director of the Union Theatre Repertory Co., Melbourne, 1953-1955, general manager of the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Sydney, 1955-1957, manager of the Victorian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, 1957-1959. He published "Recollections at Play (A Life In Australian Theatre)" in 1993.
