Biographical notes:
The Administrative Office was established in 1966 by Charles Nagel, who served as the first Director of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG). The Administrative Office oversees the administration of NPG activities and programs. It also establishes and maintains control over Gallery operations.
In 1991, when Marc Pachter left as the Assistant Director for History and Public Programs, the position was eliminated, and the services (Office of Publications and the Library) part of his responsibility was shifted to the Assistant Director for Administration. In 1992, this position was named the Associate Director for Administration. The remaining programmatic parts of his responsibility were shifted to the Deputy Director's office.
Professional staff of the Administrative Office have included: Barbara A. Hart, Associate Director for Administration, 1980- ; Joseph A. Yakaitis, Administrative Officer, 1967-1969; Douglas E. Evelyn, Deputy Director and Administrative Officer, 1969-1979; Barbara A. Faison, 1979-1980; Eloise P. Baden, 1996- ; and Marc Pachter, who was with NPG from 1975-1990, began as a Historian and ended his tenure as the Assistant Director for History and Public Programs.
