Russell J. Seibert was a horticulturist, botanist, and director of Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. in botany from George Washington University in St. Louis. Water lilies were his original area of research interest, and Dr. Seibert had a long association with Shaw Gardens in St. Louis.
In the 1940s he joined the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and began research in plant genetics in Haiti, Peru, and Costa Rica. In 1950 he became head of the arboretum department at the Los Angeles Botanical Gardens. In 1955 he became director of Longwood Gardens, a position he held until his retirement in 1979.
