The University of Newcastle gained autonomy in 1965, having been, since 1951, a College of the University of New South Wales. In 1989 the University amalgamated with the Conservatorium of Music at Newcastle and the Hunter Institute of Higher Education (formerly Newcastle Teachers' College then Newcastle College of Advanced Education).

The Newcastle University College, affiliated with the New South Wales University of Technology, was opened in December 1951. Having received separate administrative powers in 1957, the name of the institution was changed to the University of Newcastle following an Act of Parliament in 1965.
