Biographical notes:
Butler (1921-2003) served in the Navy for twenty-seven years, starting in 1938.
He was stationed aboard the USS Tennessee in Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor, served aboard minesweepers during World War II, logged 2,000 hours of aerial navigation work, served on the USS Noble during the Korean War, and commanded units such as the Beach Jumper Unit One, the Reserve training center in Dubuque (Iowa), and the USNS Buckner. After retirement from the Navy, he worked at the St. Regis Paper Company in Dubuque for eighteen years.
