U.S. Representative from South Carolina, 1843-1848, serving as Calhoun Democrat; born near Abbeville, S.C., in Ninety Six District; served in U.S. Army during War of 1812; lived in Savannah, Ga., and elsewhere before settling in Columbia, S.C., where he served as cashier of the State (branch) bank before election to Congress; served in the U.S. House until his death.
