Ed Emberley was born October 19, 1931 in Malden, Massachusetts. He studied at Massachusetts College of Art, earning a B.F.A., and at the Rhode Island School of Design. Emberley married Barbara Cullen, who became his frequent collaborator, and had two children. Emberley began illustrating children's books in the 1960s. He also has written a number of books, and did illustrations for pre-adolescent textbooks. In 1967, Emberley was recognized with a Caldecott Honor citation for One Wide River to Cross, written by Barbara Emberley. The following year the Emberleys won the Caldecott for Drummer Hoff . Emberley has continued to write and illustrate children's picture books, including a number of "concept" books and a series that introduce children to drawing. Emberley is noted by critics for his ability to create pictures in a wide variety of media that "illuminate" their texts, using woodcuts, pen, ink, collage, silk screen, and pencil.
