Joseph Lord (1672-1748), born in Charlestown, Mass., graduated from Harvard in 1691 and soon became the leader of a group organizing a Puritan church in South Carolina. In 1695, he was ordained pastor of the proposed church and sailed to South Carolina to settle the colony (named Dorchester) near Charleston, S.C. In 1716, he returned to Massachusetts and in 1720, was ordained minister of the church in Chatham, Mass., where he remained until his death.
