Broadway House (Mauch Chunk, Pa.).
Biographical notes:
The Broadway House, one of three hotels in Mauch Chunk, Pa., in the early 19th century, was built by Daniel Bertsch in 1833. From 1841 to 1850 it was operated by John Lentz, who then turned it over to his son-in-law, Robert Klotz. Klotz had come to Mauch Chunk in 1833 as a canal boat driver and later served as a lieutenant in the Mexican War. In 1854 Klotz was invited to move to "Bleeding Kansas" by Governor A. H. Reeder, a native of the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. The Broadway House then passed to his brother-in-law, Alfred Lentz. Klotz returned to Mauch Chunk in 1857.
