Daniel Alexander Payne Murray, black bibliographer and historian, was born on March 3, 1852 in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1871 Murray joined the staff of the Library of Congress as the personal assistant to the librarian, and was promoted to assistant librarian in 1881. In 1899 Murray began his research for what was intended to be an encyclopedia of the lives and accomplishments of blacks from the time of the Old Testament. Lack of subscribers made publication unfeasible. Murray retired from the Library of Congress in 1922 and died on December 31, 1925 in Washington, D.C.
