William Esty was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on July 9, 1868, son of William Esty (Class of 1860 and Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy) and Martha A. Cushing Esty. Cole received his B.A. from Amherst in 1889 and his M.A. from Amherst in 1893. He also received a B.S. from M.I.T. in 1893. Esty was a Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois from 1893 to 1901 and Professor of Engineering at Lehigh University from 1901 to 1928. Esty married Julia L. Coy of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1894. He died on July 6, 1928.

Cole received his B.A. from Amherst in 1889 and his M.A. from Amherst in 1893. He also received a B.S. from M.I.T. in 1893. Esty was a Professor of Engineering at the University of Illinois from 1893 to 1901 and Professor of Engineering at Lehigh University from 1901 to 1928. Esty married Julia L.
