Lucy Madison Maverick was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 1883 January 5, one of six children born to George Madison Maverick (1845-1913) and Mary Elizabeth Vance (1855-1930). Her paternal grandfather Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870) signed the Texas Declaration of Independence; her older sister Mary Rowena (Rena) Maverick Green (1874–1962) was an historian, artist, suffragette, conservationist, and civic leader. After graduating from Main Avenue High School in San Antonio, Texas, Lucy Maverick studied creative writing at Smith College and illustration at the Chicago Academy of Art. In the mid 1910s, she studied and painted in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and taught at the Stelton School in New Jersey. Maverick’s extensive travels in Mexico in the early 1920s led to an interest in pre-Columbian art and archeology.

As an artist, Maverick focused on introspective views of her home, garden, and travels, and she created and exhibited oil paintings, watercolors, block prints, large pencil drawings, oil-base crayon drawings, and sculpture. Maverick also supported younger artists and was a member of several San Antonio art groups. In addition, she was involved in restoring and preserving several historic San Antonio homes and was on the board of directors of the Yanaguana Society.

Lucy Maverick died in San Antonio on 1967 July 16.
