Journalist, lawyer, Confederate officer, planter, state representative, and U.S. Representative (1879-1883) from Sumter District, S.C.; educated at South Carolina College, Class of 1850; began practicing law in 1852; during Civil War entered the Confederate Army as a Captain of Infantry; later promoted to adjutant of the Twenty-third Regiment, South Carolina Infantry; member of the S.C. House, 1865-1867; appointed agent of the State of South Carolina in 1866 to apply for and receive the land script donated to South Carolina by Congress; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1876; master in equity for Sumter County, S.C., 1884-1893; husband of Agnes Davison McDowell.
