Governor of Massachusetts.

From the description of Description of John Winthrop, 1631 March 7. (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 71067142

John Winthrop (1588-1649), a Puritan lawyer, one of the founders and the governor of the colony of Massachusetts. In March 1630, Winthrop began his journal that he kept until January 1649. By the early 1640s, the entries became more irregular and retrospective, and the narrative was more of a history than a personal journal. There were three volumes: the first covered the period from late March 1630 to September 1636, the second, to December 1644, and the third covered the period from September 17, 1644 to January 11, 1649. The manuscript was well recognized as an authoritative source for the history of New England; a number of scholars borrowed the manuscript for extended periods, among them William Hubbard, Cotton Mather, Thomas Prince, Ezra Stiles, Jonathan Trumbull, and Jeremy Belknap. The original manuscript of the second volume was accidentally destroyed in 1825.

From the description of Journal of John Winthrop: copy, after 1743. (Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens). WorldCat record id: 706998556
