Henry Gordon Sweet graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1921 and received a B.A. from Yale in 1926. He then joined Henry C. Rowe & Company, a firm of oyster growers organized by his grandfather, Raul Rowe, in 1868. He became general manager and later president of the Rowe Company. In 1945 Sweet served as consultant to the War Shipping Administration in the Division of Ship Requirements. In 1954 he became executive director of the newly formed Citizens Action Commission, and in 1959 became assistant director of the agency in charge of the Long Wharf Redevelopment Project.
