Biographical notes:

Donald J. Augustin was born on May 7, 1934. He grew up in Rugby, North Dakota, and distinguished himself on the Rugby High School basketball team. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Dakota in 1956. While at UND, Augustin earned three varsity football letters and four varsity basketball letters. He was one of UND's famous "stadium rats," having resided in a student room underneath UND Memorial Stadium. He was also active in the local chapter of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and in the UND ROTC Air Force Arnold Aviation Society. From 1956-1960, Augustin served in the Air Force and was stationed in Washington D.C. At this time, he played football for Bolling Air Force Base and basketball for Andrews Air Force Base. Augustin then worked for 13 years as a cost analyst for North American Rockwell. He earned his master's degree in Eastern European and Russian history from California State University at Fullerton in 1974. He then moved to Mission Viejo, CA, and became a cost analyst for the U.S. Postal Service. He has been involved with the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy's precision flying team and has conducted considerable research in Eastern European and Russian history. As of 1986, Augustin's personal research library contained 6,400 volumes. This collection includes books on intelligence agencies, military histories, and state histories.
