Upper Mississippi Waterway Association.
Biographical notes:
The association was formed in 1932 by the men who had in 1925 organized the Upper Mississippi Barge Line Company. The company built a fleet of towboats and barges for operation between the Twin Cities and St. Louis, leased the equipment to the Inland Waterways Corporation, and later sold it to the same group. The purposes of the association were closely related to those of the company: to promote the broad economic interests of the Mississippi Valley through the development of an all-water transportation route via the Mississippi River to domestic and foreign markets; to promote completion of the nine-foot channel; to develop the use of inland waterways transportation; and to fend off detrimental legislation and regulation.
