Red Butte Garden and Arboretum.

Active 1968
Active 2001

Biographical notes:

In 1961, the Utah State Legislature established the campus grounds of the University of Utah as the official State Arboretum. An Arboretum Advisory Board was then appointed, but a combination of deficient funds and a rapidly expanding campus hindered the creation of an effective program and daily operation of the arboretum was conferred upon the Dept. of Facilities Planning and Physical Plant and Operations. A renewed commitment to the arboretum was made in 1977 with the hiring of W. Richard Hildreth as the first full-time Director. In 1980, a site encoompassing 147 acres at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon was chosen as a permanent location for the arboretum and ground was officially broken in 1983. Red Butte Garden and Arboretum was opened to the public in 1985.
