Variant names
Dates:
Birth 1883
Death 1972

Biographical notes:

A native of Germany, Pringsheim had emigrated to Japan in 1931, becoming a professor of music at the Ueno Academy of Music. He was the twin brother of Katharina Mann (née Pringsheim), wife of Thomas Mann. From 1941 to 1946 Pringsheim was director of the Tokyo Chamber Symphony Orchestra. After that he stayed for a time in the U.S. at the home of the Manns. Presumably he had social contact with Alma Mahler at that time. Pringsheim returned to Japan in 1951 and became director of the Musashino Academy of Music in Tokyo. For programs from performances conducted by Pringsheim of Mahler's second and fifth symphonies in Tokyo in 1933, see under: Memoribilia related to Gustav Mahler.
