Biographical notes:

The Forbes family of Boston and Milton, Mass. was one of the most important families of Boston merchants engaged in the China trade. John Murray Forbes (1771-1831) was United States consul at Hamburg and Copenhagen (1801-1819) and United States agent at Buenos Aires (1819-1831). His nephews Thomas, Robert Bennet, and John Murray Forbes were connected with Perkins and Copmany and later Russell and Company in the China trade. John Murray Forbes (1813-1898) was later involved in railroad development in the west. His grandson W. Cameron Forbes (1870-1959) was a partner in J.M. Forbes and Company and governor-general of the Philippines (1909-1913).
