Father of Professor J. Le Gay Brereton and grandfather of the poet R. D. FitzGerald. Born in Yorkshire he graduated from Edinburgh University and came to Australia in 1859 where he practiced medicine in Sydney.

John Le Gay Brereton in 1902 was appointed Assistant Librarian and later Librarian of Fisher Library, University of Sydney. In 1921 he was appointed Professor of English Literature, University of Sydney. H.R. Mailer, a colleague at Fisher Library went to the Public Library of South Australia in 1910.
