Providence Baptist Church (Charlotte, N.C.)

Dates:
Active 1954
Active 1988

Biographical notes:

This congregation can trace its roots to 1953, when a small number of Baptists in southeastern Charlotte met to gauge the level of interest in establishing a new church in their part of town. Because southeastern Charlotte was growing rapidly in the 1950s, it quickly became apparent that there was a great deal of interest in forming a new congregation. The formally organized in 1954, called their first pastor and bought acreage to build a new church that same year. By the 1957 they had built their first of many building facilities. Before long, their membership had grown to more than a thousand members, and they soon had to build onto original structure. Within twenty years this congregation intiated the formation of three other Baptist church congregations: Carmel, Sharon and Candlewyck Baptist churches.
