Slovenian Progressive Benefit Society (Slovenska Svobodomiselna Podporna Jednota) (Chicago, Ill.).
Biographical notes:
The Slovenska Svobodomiselna Podporna Zveza (SSPZ) was founded in 1909 as successor to the Slovenska Narodna Podporna Zveza. It was primarily the creation of Martin Konda, a Slovene editor and journalist, publisher of Glas Svobode. Konda also played an important role in creation of Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota and of the Jugoslav Socialist Federation.
Konda came into conflict with Slovene socialists betewen 1905 and 1908, was expelled from the Socialist Party of the USA, and founded the SSPZ to aid Slovene immigrants without the constraints of socialist doctrine. The SSPZ became very successful, and worked closely with other Slovenian and Slavic immigrants. In 1941, the SSPZ merged with the Slovenska Narodna Podporna Jednota.
