Biographical notes:

In 1877, James Whitcomb Riley and John Oscar Henderson, editor of the Kokomo Dispatch, published a poem they claimed was written by Edgar Allen Poe. The poem was actually written by Riley, who wanted to play a joke on his detractors. The hoax ran for a considerable time before it was exposed, and continued to pop up throughout Riley's lifetime.

From the description of Leonainie: The Poe-Poem Hoax of James Whitcomb Riley, 1948-1949. (Indiana Historical Society Library). WorldCat record id: 21126151
