Theodore Henry Hittell was an American author and lawyer. Born in Pennsylvania, he moved to Ohio to attend college, and then followed his brother John to California. He worked as a journalist, practised law, and published several books, including a history of California.

Grizzly Adams claims he was born James Capen Adams in Medway, Mass. on Oct. 20, 1807. It is believed that he was actually John Adams, the older brother of James. His actual birth date is set at Oct. 22, 1812. He married in 1836 and moved to Calif. in 1849. He returned to Mass. in 1860 where he died in Neponset on Oct. 25, 1860. He is also known as Wild Yankee, William Adams, Old Adams, and J.C. Adams, among others. He was made famous by Theodore Hittell's work.
