Biographical notes:

Al Swift began his congressional career after working at KVOS TV in Bellingham, WA and serving as top aide to Representative Lloyd Meed. Once elected to Congress in 1978, Swift sat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired its subcommittee on Transportation and Hazardous Materials, and served on the House Administration Committee and the Elections subcommittee. He played a major role in many important issues during his tenure, including those concerning clean air, the spotted owl, hydroelectric power, nuclear waste, broadcast deregulation, telecommunications, uniform poll closing and campaign finance reform. Swift served eight successive terms and chose not to run for re-election in 1994.
