Biographical notes:

Organization in Concord, Mass., devoted to turning Walden Pond State Reservation into a national or state sanctuary in memory of Henry David Thoreau, to restricting public access, and to protecting the landscape and ecology of the pond and the surrounding area. Founded in 1980 and directed until 1993 by environmentalist Mary P. Sherwood. Between 1986 and 1990, the organization collected thousands of signatures in support of creating a sanctuary and of returning Walden to its natural state, to be sent to Mass. Governor Michael Dukakis.
