Biographical notes:

Born in Tennessee in 1813, John Sutherland Menefee moved with his family to Jackson County, Texas, and he went on to play a role in several important military engagements in early Texas. As an officer in the local militia he took part in the battle of Sandy Creek in 1832, and later joined the Texas army at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. Finally in 1842 Menefee again joined Texas forces against Mexican incursions. Menefee also held public office as post master, county clerk, congressman, county judge and justice of the peace. He died in Jackson County in 1884.
