Scull, John, 1765-1828
John Scull was a Pennsylvania publisher and editor. He was born in Reading, and, at the age of 21, he and a partner hauled type, press, ink, and paper across the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh, establishing the first newspaper west of the Alleghenies, the Gazette. He became one of the most prominent citizens of Pittsburgh, serving in many community positions, including postmaster, and co-founding what would become the University of Pittsburgh.
