Gray, Laura, 1909-1958.
Artist Laura Gray (1909-1958) became staff cartoonist for The Militant, the newspaper of the Socialist Workers Party in 1944, and produced a cartoon for the paper each week from 1944 to 1957. Gray offered the newspaper a unique combination of left political views and strong artistic abilities. She had turned to art early in life, entering the Chicago Art Institute when she was only 16, and achieving recognition for her painting and sculpture when she was in her early twenties.
