Watson, Robert, 1925-

Robert Watson was born in Passaic, N.J. in 1925, and educated at Williams College and Johns Hopkins University where he earned his Doctorate in 1955. Faculty member in the English Department at UNCG from 1953-1987. Awards and honors include: American Scholar Poetry Prize (1959); National Endowment of the Arts Fellow (1974-1975); American Academy and Institute of Arts & Letters Award (1977). Watson was the main architect of UNCG's Creative Writing Program, considered one of the best in the nation. In 1966 Watson and graduate writing student Lawrence Judson Reynolds began the Greensboro Review, a respected literary journal that has earned a national reputation.
