Church of the Messiah (Montpelier, Vt.)

The Church of the Messiah was incorporated as an independent liberal religious body in Montpelier, Vermont, in December 1864. Its members claimed Universalist and Unitarian ties but chose a name with no denominational affiliation. The Independent Meeting House Society was then incorporated for the purpose of building and maintaining the church edifice, which was erected at the corner of Main and School streets in 1865. The church was designed by Thomas W. Silloway of Boston, architect for Vermont's third Statehouse. The official name of the church was changed in 1980 to the Unitarian Church of Montpelier, Vermont.
