Butterley, Nigel

Composer and lecturer. Nigel Butterley was born in Sydney on 13 May, 1935. His compositions include works for solo piano, four string quartets and other chamber music, the opera "Lawrence Hargrave flying alone", and several major orchestral works. After working on the music staff of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for some years, Butterley became lecturer in contemporary music at Newcastle Conservatorium in 1973. In 1991 he retired and in the same year he became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). In 1996 Butterley was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Newcastle. Butterley went on to teach composition at Sydney Conservatorium, and he lectured for Sydney University's Centre for Continuing Education. He also worked with Higher School Certificate student composers, and was a tutor for the Amateur Chamber Music Society.
