Medical College of Alabama. Office of the Dean.

The four-year Medical College of Alabama began operations in Birmingham, Alabama, as a unit of the University of Alabama, in 1945. Dr. S. Richardson Hill became dean in 1962. As dean, Hill spent considerable time recruiting new faculty members and department heads. His efforts resulted in the arrival of Dr. John Kirklin as chair of the Department of Surgery in 1966. He also oversaw an increase in Medical College programs, a revision of the Medical College curriculum, and a reorganization of Medical College activities in University Hospital. Hill, formerly director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine, later served as vice president for health affairs, president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a distinguished professor of UAB. Hill left the deanship in 1968 to become vice president for health affairs.
