Gage, Gaston G., 1898-1983
Gaston G. Gage was born September 16, 1898 at Chester, South Carolina. After graduation from Chester High School he attended the University of South Carolina until he left to serve in the U.S. Army in 1918. In 1919 he entered Clemson College, graduated in 1921 with a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering. He worked for Aragon-Baldwin Mills until 1932 when he returned to Clemson as a instructor in yarn manufacturing. He attended the University of North Carolina in 1935-36 and received a Master of Education degree from Pennsylvania State in 1941. Gage returned to Clemson and moved up the academic ladder until he became Dean of Textiles in 1958. In 1964 he retired. He was professionally active in textile organizations, and he continued to support Clemson alumni and athletic activities. In his community and church he held responsible positions. He was an avid bird-watcher and fox-hunter. He married Ruth Vardell of Red Springs, N.C. in 1927 and they had two sons, Gaston, Jr. and Charles Vardell who also graduated from Clemson in Textile Engineering. Mrs. Gage died in 1982 and Professor Gage died September 25, 1983.
