Vallandigham, Clement L. (Clement Laird), 1820-1871
Ohio lawyer and politician. As a member of Congress from 1858 to 1863 he became a leader of the Peace Democrats or Copperheads, who opposed secession but urged compromise and negotiation for peace on any terms to avoid prolonging the Civil War.
